FAQ

More Details

What is The Fabric of Britain?

The Fabric of Britain is a nationwide initiative that celebrates community, creativity, and storytelling through the art of quilting. Individuals, families, community groups, and businesses are invited to create quilt blocks inspired by cherished memories or stories, which are then assembled into memory quilts.

How can I participate?

There are several ways to get involved:

  • Attend a Community Sewing Day: Join us at one of our events to create your own quilt block with the support of volunteers and a Memory Artist.

  • Donate a quilt block: Create a quilt block at home and donate it to be included in one of our memory quilts.

  • Contribute a piece of fabric or clothing: Donate a piece of fabric or clothing with a story behind it to be incorporated into a quilt.

Do I need to have quilting experience to participate?

No, all skill levels are welcome! Our Community Sewing Days are designed to be inclusive and beginner friendly. Experienced quilters and volunteers will be on hand to assist you with sewing techniques and design ideas.

What are the dimensions and requirements for quilt blocks?

Each quilt block should measure 9.5 inches by 9.5 inches, including a 0.25-inch seam allowance on all sides. Blocks should be made from cotton or cotton-blend fabrics and can be pieced, appliquéd, embroidered, or painted.

How do I donate a quilt block?

You can donate your completed quilt block in one of two ways:

  • In person: Bring your block to a Community Sewing Day or designated drop-off location, along with Block Donation Form.

  • By mail: Send your block to the address provided on our website, along with a completed Block Donation Form.

Please make sure you include a photo of your block along with your block donation form, so that we can keep your square and story together.

What happens to the memory quilts once they are completed?

The memory quilts are publicly displayed in exhibitions to celebrate the stories and memories of our participants. After the exhibitions, the quilts are donated to local charities or community organisations as gifts from The Fabric of Britain project.

Can I submit multiple quilt blocks?

Yes, you are welcome to submit multiple quilt blocks! Feel free to create as many blocks as you like and donate them individually or together.

How can my business get involved?

Businesses can support The Fabric of Britain by purchasing a business block with their logo or company crest to be included in the memory quilts. Please contact us for more information on business block donations.
